Ephemeral / Eternal, June 2022

WELCOME TO OUR GROUP EXHIBITION!

CURATED BY ALICIA PUIG OF PXP CONTEMPORARY

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Ephemeral / Eternal is a virtual exhibition centered around the inherent polarities that exist within art. The essential question guiding this exhibit is: how does the work we create reflect our current state of being and where we are going?

As artists, we often contemplate the duality within our own art practice - the fleeting moments we spend immersed in our studios, while also considering the longevity and lasting impact of the work we create. For many, the pandemic forced us to contemplate our own legacy and the imprint we will one day leave behind. And yet, when faced with these deep truths and unsettling questions, we often find the only answer can be found in the present moment. In this exhibition, we are showcasing work that reflects and perhaps even questions the ephemeral and eternal nature of art.

NOTE FROM THE CURATOR

The juxtaposition of ephemeral and eternal felt like a timely theme to invite artists to explore for this exhibition. In just a few short years, numerous long-held institutions, laws, beliefs, and ways of life have been upended on a global scale. It's challenging not to take for granted what we have today. As such, we've been dealt hard lessons with hindsight reminding us of what is no longer ours. So where does that leave art? Directly in the thick of it. Artists have risen to the challenge of not only working through their emotions to navigate our new social, political, and environmental norms, but also of reinterpreting their experiences through art and sharing this work for public consumption. We benefit greatly from the artists who do this, finding clarity, inspiration, an escape, commentary, and more from their images and words. The very least we can give back is allowing them the space to be seen and recognizing the important work they do, hopefully with the result that each piece leaves an impact on us longer than the artist expected it would.
