ABOUT
Obtaining their B.A. in Psychology and Fine Arts, Reid began developing their characteristic style while working with photography and painting, often depicting the nourishing quality of nature and close human relationships. When they began working with collage, Reid’s creative process was supercharged, leading them to create over 200 pieces within only two years of adopting the new medium.
Reid co-founded the Instagram movement #BlackCollagesMatter, encouraging artists to create work that centered Black subjects. They then curated an art book published by {th ink} featuring works inspired by the movement, donating proceeds to the Black Trans Femmes in the Arts Collective. Reid has regularly exhibited their work in New York and been featured both nationally and internationally in several print publications and online editorials, including a commission by Allure Magazine.
Brittany lives and works in Rochester, New York.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I choose images based on the emotions they conjure, bringing together different emotions in bits and pieces until the final work evokes the complex and subtle experience I want to convey. Images of florals and animals highlight our connection to the natural world and each other, while images of the female body and Black women celebrate the power of the female experience and Black women’s innate beauty.
I often choose source material from the 80s and 90s to create a nostalgic atmosphere in my work, recalling the strong emotions and unique world of childhood. My own experience as a queer, Black femme and mother flow into my work, imbuing it with both individual and universal layers.
